City of Rye-Commission on Human Rights

Meeting Date: April 25, 2019

In Attendance: Danielle Tagger-Epstein, Ruth Merkatz, Corey Stark, Amanda Witheiler, Emily Dorin, Judy Secon, Kelly Grayer, Adrienne Mecca

Danielle Tagger-Epstein called the meeting to order at 7:38 pm.


A draft of the Safe Space Pledge has been completed and will be shared with the Commission members. Opportunities for training were discussed and will be further outlined.

Members of the Commission continue to work with RAISE to develop a flier and training opportunities for an “Everybody Plays” initiative with the intention of increasing participation in community sports.

Commission member, Ruth Merkatz, provided background about the Human Rights Commission in Rye and the nature of citizen complaints in the past. Danielle Tagger-Epstein reminded everyone that the process to file a complaint is on the website.

Commission member, Kelley Grayer, reported on the Green Light Campaign and shared a recent article involving a case in Pelham in which the driver who had been deported and was arrested for driving without a license.

New Business:

The Human Rights Commission Award was discussed. It will be awarded at the Women’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service in November. A tentative June launch date is proposed with a closing date for applications by October 21, 2019.

The Commission discussed the possibility of creating a list of members to serve as alternates should a quorum be needed. Also, members will be needed to serve on the Board of the proposed 501 (c) (3).

The creation of an intern position was discussed and a list of responsibilities will be developed.

Danielle Tagger-Epstein closed the meeting at 9:10 pm.
